EBay wanted its community of nine million UK members to be able to take part in auctions even when they are away from their PCs, using mobile technology.
After testing several methods, including SMS-based bidding via text message, eBay's partner Volantis Systems designed a dynamic Mobile Web Page system to create eBay Anywhere.
It's a simplified version of the eBay.co.uk web site, based on SMS and GPRS technology and suitable for mobile phones and smart phones. Ebay Anywhere enables users to search for items on eBay.co.uk that are available to buyers located in the UK, view simplified listings with item and seller information, add items to their watched list, upload photos and increase their bids while they are on the move.
The service also formats dynamically for the user's individual phone to fit the screen, colour and resolution capabilities of different handsets.
